This manuscript presents almost ten years of research. Looking back on this period, I realise how fortunate I have been to cross paths with remarkable people who have shaped both my scientific journey and my life in many different ways. The work presented in these pages would not have been possible without their support, trust and collaboration, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of them.
First and foremost, I would like to thank the members of the jury, and in particular the rapporteurs, for the time and effort they devoted to reading and assessing this work.
As always, I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers and professors who guided me towards science and the coastal environments. Particular thanks go to my mentors, Sabine and Aldo during the PhD, to whom I owe much of my scientific foundation, and Xiao Hua Wang during the postdoc. I think this is the first time I have had the opportunity to acknowledge in writing the important role Prof. Wang has played in my career. I learned a great deal from his scientific vision and leadership, particularly his ability to connect fundamental research with societal challenges and to create opportunities for those around him. His continuous support gave me the freedom and means to begin developing my own research direction, mentor students and establish myself as an independent scientist. Thank you for everything.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues and friends at the University of New South Wales in Canberra: Alberto, Ana, Leo, Raimundo, Marcos, Mona, Nick, Carlota, Matteo, Andreas, all the Master’s and PhD candidates from the oceanography group, the entire Telopea team, and the many others I had the privilege of crossing paths with during my time in Australia. A part of me was left behind in that wonderful country, somewhere among its wild beaches and creeks, and I hope to return there very soon.
As anyone who has worked with me knows, mentoring young researchers is one of the things I enjoy most about this profession. The list of Master’s students I have had the pleasure to supervise over the years is now too long to include here, but much of the work presented in this manuscript would not exist without their contributions. I would particularly like to acknowledge the doctoral researchers I have supervised: Zhixin, Yuan, Betty and Jacques, whose contributions are woven throughout many chapters of this manuscript. I hope I have been able to plant in them the seeds of critical thinking, scientific curiosity, integrity, and enthusiasm for research. I also cannot forget the postdoctoral researchers and other early-career researchers with whom I have shared this journey: Wasif, Sophie, Arnaud, Rémi, Jun, Marine, Camille.
This journey has also been shared with colleagues from many corners of the world, whose collaboration, expertise and friendship have enriched both my research and my life: Elisa, Damien, Alberto, Nicolas, Guillaume, Sebastien, Sophie, Miguel, Manuel, Arnoldo, and many others. The complete list would be far too long to include everyone here, but I carry with me the discussions and friendships built along the way.
Je souhaite également remercier l’ensemble des collègues d’EPOC avec qui j’ai eu le plaisir d’interagir au cours de ces dernières années, pour leur disponibilité, les échanges scientifiques et humains, et leur ouverture à de nouvelles idées. Merci en particulier à l’équipe EA (Jérôme, Charlotte, Bénédicte, Christelle, Edgar,….) et à Alicia et Linda pour m’avoir aidée, dès mon arrivée au laboratoire, à intégrer mes recherches sur le transport des microplastiques dans les projets en cours et à les ouvrir à de nouvelles perspectives interdisciplinaires.
Et bien sûr, merci à l’équipe METHYS, sans aucun doute et en toute objectivité la meilleure équipe du monde. Merci pour votre soutien, votre bonne humeur, votre camaraderie et pour toujours chercher à rendre les choses plus simples. Une pensée spéciale pour Philippe, qui avait commencé à lire mon premier chapitre et à me donner de retour, en espérant qu’il pourra lire le manuscrit complet très bientôt. Merci à Vincent et Aldo, toujours présents quand on a besoin d’eux. Charlène et Marine, pour leur aide précieuse sur le terrain et pour faire vivre la plateforme Mesures Physiques avec autant d’énergie. À Bruno, pour son soutien constant en tant que responsable d’équipe, pour ses conseils toujours pertinents, son aide dans la recherche de financements, et surtout pour la confiance qu’il m’a accordée au fil des années. Et enfin, Vania. Merci pour ton amitié, pour avoir été mon bras droit tout au long de l’aventure PLASTINEST et pour m’avoir donné le goût de l’interdisciplinarité. Grâce à nos nombreuses discussions et à ta présence au sein de l’équipe, j’ai peu à peu osé franchir les frontières de ma discipline. Une partie des perspectives présentées dans ce manuscrit doit beaucoup à ces échanges.
Y cómo no, agradecer como siempre a mi familia, especialmente a mis padres y a mi hermano, y a mis amigas de siempre, por ser las raíces que me mantienen firme a lo largo del camino y la brújula que siempre me devuelve al sur. A mi compañero de viaje, gracias por caminar a mi lado durante todos estos años y por compartir las alegrías e incertidumbres de esta aventura. Mi trayectoria profesional no puede entenderse sin ese equilibrio que hemos creado juntos a lo largo de los años. Y por último, gracias a mis niños por iluminarme cada día con vuestra sonrisa y alegría. Llegasteis al mundo durante los años que recoge este manuscrito, y desde entonces la vida es mucho más bonita. Espero que nunca perdáis la curiosidad y las ganas de entender el mundo que os rodea. Vosotros me recordáis cada día por qué merece la pena seguir haciéndose preguntas y buscando respuestas. Porque, en una época en la que la simplificación, la opinión rápida y las certezas fáciles parecen imponerse, resulta más necesario que nunca cultivar el espíritu crítico, cuestionar nuestras propias certezas y buscar respuestas fundamentadas en la evidencia.
